evacuees< back to Projects

The chilling secret that kept a family apart for fifty years

Spring in Canada and a riverbank is washed away slowly revealing the preserved body of a teenager. When police investigate, they discover a second shallow grave, its gruesome contents preserved for decades…

In Evacuees, three boys go missing when they are evacuated from London during the Blitz. Fifty years later, their younger sister discovers that two of them are still alive and living on a remote farm in Canada. She arrives hoping to piece together their past and to repair her own damaged life, only to find her brothers at the centre of a murder investigation. Desperate for her brothers to be innocent, Lena faces growing evidence of their guilt. But neither she nor the cynical Inspector Connelly is ready for what really happened.

Evacuees is a densely plotted psychological thriller that explores the character of relationships, trust, hope, control and cruelty as it unravels a mystery spanning decades. As the story unfolds, it pits the experience and instincts of Lena, a middle-aged social worker against those of a seasoned detective and his team. It is about ordinary, flawed, fragile people, and, above all, our relationship to the truth.

Evacuees is based on real events and shows that many of the things we fear about the present have been with us for longer than we care to remember. The movie provides a great opportunity to cast both new and veteran talent. Key parts include not one but two, strong leading roles for mature female actors that make it an ideal vehicle for major talent.
